About Ubu English

We’re building an AI-assisted ESL learning platform for intermediate-to-advanced learners. The platform combines structured learning with AI services to support speaking, writing, and progress tracking.

The Role

Ubu English is seeking an independent contractor as  a Nepal-based Engineering Lead to serve as the primary implementation lead for platform development. You’ll work closely with our fractional Platform Tech Lead and coordinate with external contractors, ensuring code quality and security standards.  You are the primary builder and delivery lead for the internal engineering stream. 

Key Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day engineering execution for the Nepal-based workstream
• Implement platform infrastructure and core services
• Coordinate with external contractors on integration work
• Conduct code reviews and enforce quality standards
• Manage deployments and environment configurations (dev/staging/prod)

What Success Looks Like (First Month)

Within the first few weeks, you’ve created reliable execution velocity: internal engineering tasks are moving in a predictable cadence, integrations with external contractors are unblocked, code quality is high, and environments/releases are handled with discipline.

Must-Have Profile

• 5+ years full-stack development experience with production systems
• Strong backend expertise (Node.js, Python/Django, or similar)
• Frontend proficiency (React, Next.js, or modern frameworks)
• Cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Experience leading small engineering teams
• Strong understanding of security and access control
• Excellent communication skills in English

Nice-to-Have

• EdTech or LMS platform experience
• Experience coordinating with external contractors
• Nepal-based with a local recruiting network
• Startup environment experience

Contract Terms

This is an independent contractor engagement and will be structured under a written Statement of Work (SOW) with defined deliverables. 

• Time & Materials (hourly) or monthly retainer (SOW-based)
• Equity participation may be available for exceptional fit (discussed under NDA)
• Potential path to an expanded role over time, including full-time, if there’s mutual fit
